I'm a graduate
(1975-1980) of the University of Southern California -- as is my
Dad. The family bleeds cardinal & gold, particularly around football
season.
Pop and I have great memories of attending games together over the
years, including some real disappointing stinkers in South Bend against
the Irish. But we've lived through the glory years too... John McKay,
John Robinson's first tenure, National Championships, Heisman trophy
winners.
It's all
made worthwhile when we beat the Bruins or Notre Dame and salvage
an otherwise lousy season. There's an old saying that "God
is a Trojan." Count the Docherty's as believers!
While
at school, I was a proud member of the Trojan Knights (officials
hosts of USC) and the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. Happily, the Knights
tradition continues today...unhappily (at USC), the Phi Tau tradition
does not. |

Symbols of
Troy |
|
The
university's seal displays three torches, representing the arts,
the sciences, and philosophy. In heraldic language, the torch is
a symbol of learning. In the background is the setting sun, representing
the West and (in heraldic symbolism) power and life. Embracing the
torches and sun is a California poppy, the USC flower and heraldic
symbol of growth. Completing the seal is the school motto. |

Officially known as
the Trojan Shrine, the most recognizable icon of USC is "Tommy
Trojan." The lifesize bronze statue was created by Roger Noble
Burnham in 1930 to commemorate USC's 50th anniversary. The statue
weighs 2,000
lbs and cost $10,000. The inscription on the granite base says, Faithful,
Scholarly, Skillful, Courageous, Ambitious. Two models were used
to sculpt Tommy: Russ Saunders (upper body), and Ernie Pickert
(lower body)

-Quote of the 20th
Century-
"I
feel like somebody reached into my stomach and pulled out my guts.
I never felt this
low."
Lou Holtz, after USC beat Notre Dame 27-20 in Holtz's 1996 final
game as head coach. |
