"...to honor those sites
that stand above the fray..." |
|
The
Web has many personalities. Depending on the road taken, the Web
experience can be at once redeeming and frustrating, beautiful and
hideous, efficient and painfully slow. But in the final analysis, this
medium is unlike any before it. We are certain that regardless of your
experience, you too have witnessed the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
In
its evolution from data warehouse, the Web has become a palette on which
many talented people offer their best. Artists, farmers and doctors
alike contribute for a variety of reasons. Commercial reward, personal
pleasure or simply a shot at legacy and its 15 minutes of fame
lead us to create on the Web. But since the advent of simple authoring
tools, it is the personal Web site that has represented the fastest
growth category among the millions of sites in existence.
It
is also this category that often represents the best and the worst of
the Internet. From stunning examples of original Flash to unbearable
blinking icons and midi files of “Feelings,” these sites can either
lift our souls or send us screaming for a good night of television.
Professionally designed corporate and commerce sites are also not
immune. Clients spending six and seven figures are often left with sites
that bear no relation to their out-of-pocket cost. These awards are
intended to honor those sites that stand above the fray and contribute
to the Web’s aesthetic and functional improvement.
